Who's Who from the film The Five Deadly Venoms
#1 Centipede Lu Feng
#2 Snake Wei Pai
#3 Scorpion Sun Chien
#4 Lizard Kuo Chui
#5 Toad Lo Meng
Teacher's Last Student Hybrid-Venom Chiang Sheng

Some interesting observations:

Wei Pai made 5 Venoms films in a row, back to back: Brave Archer Pt. II, Invincible Shaolin, Ten Tigers of Kuangtung, The Five Venoms, and Kid with the Golden Arm. My three fave Venoms films (Kid with the Golden Arm, Crippled Avengers, and Shaolin Rescuers) were made back to back, right after the other. Seven Man Army has two Venoms in it. Marco Polo, New Shaolin Boxers, and Magnificent Wanderers all have the three opera Venoms in them.

Flag of Iron and Masked Avengers were not made back to back.

Here are some words from Tom Fardy, of the MySpace page called Venoms Grindhouse <myspace.com/venomchambertom>, who provided much of this information:

Chang Cheh: A Memoir is a superb book, but more so about the man than his films. The HK Film Archive had also released a book called THE SHAW SCREEN which lists all of the theatrical release dates.

I've watched, studied and analyzed these films for the passed twenty odd years or so, and the remastered DVDs have been a great help in spotting actors in supporting roles (BEFORE they became famous) by looking closely at the backgrounds of these widescreen prints and in scenes cut from English dubbed versions. What's more, having collected 200+ issues of the Shaw's SOUTHERN SCREEN and HONG KONG MOVIE NEWS magazines over the years has been a great asset in obtaining behind the scenes information and placing their announced projects into chronological order.

I can assure you this information is the most accurate you will find as it was not compiled by watching a handful of bootleg videos nor quoting anything by Ric Meyers as many "Shaw Experts" have merely done in the past. Let's just say that I've been doing my homework on the subject!

Common errors to look for from other Venoms fans who claim to know all there is include:

1- Sun Chien is Korean.
NOT TRUE! He is Taiwanese. This mistake originated from the fact he studied the Korean martial-art Tae Kwan-Do.

2- The House Of Traps was the final complete Venoms film.
NOT TRUE! The final "complete" Venoms film would have been The Brave Archer Part 3 as it starred everybody.(Lo Mang was not in House Of Traps and Kuo Chui was not in Two Champions.) What's more, as far as release dates go, Ode To Gallantry was released 3 Venoms films afterwards!

3- Five Deadly Venoms was their first film together.
NOT TRUE! They had been appearing in secondary parts in Chang's previous Fu Sheng films. What's more, Ten Tigers Of Kwangtung was to be their debut film followed by Shaolin Bloodshed (Invincible Shaolin). (These two films were being filmed back to back.) When Fu Sheng suffered a neck injury, production began on Five Venoms, which Chang favored greatly. Its smooth production led to its being released first as an introductory vehicle for them, with Invincible Shaolin shortly afterwards heralding the return of "all stars of Shaolin Deadly Poisons" in its advertising campaign.

Also, the Shaws were very contractual, so there was no revolving door status for many of their actors. Hence, all films with the same cast of actors should be grouped together. For instance, Li Yi-Min did not return to the Shaws in 1979 just to film Life Gamble. Chang Cheh would have also cast Sun Chien in it as well, Hui Ying-Hung was a member of Liu Chia-Liang troupe by that time, (appearing in Dirty Ho and Mad Monkey Kung-Fu) and was unavailable to appear in Chang Cheh's films. No, Life Gamble was made between Brave Archer 1 and 2 and was to be his last film for Chang as well as for Shaw Brothers. That is why this as well as Heaven And Hell were both delayed till 1980 . . . Kuo, Chiang and Lu had to pick-up the slack and film new scenes to complete the films.

Things to look for:

1) all films with Liang Chia-Jen ([aka Leung Kar-yan] aka "Beardy") in them are before SHAOLIN TEMPLE, as he did not sign on with the Shaws in 1977 and preferred to stay in Taiwan making indie films like THUNDERING MANTIS, etc. (He didn't join SB until 1982 when he did SECRET SERVICE OF THE IMPERIAL COURT, NEW TALES OF THE FLYING FOX, etc.)

2) all films with Gordon Liu Chia-Hui in them were before MARCO POLO, as it was during production of that film that the Liu Brothers broke away from Chang and returned to Shaws in 1976 to begin working on THE SPIRITUAL BOXER and CHALLENGE OF THE MASTERS.

In regards to the chronology, several of the Venoms' films were lensed back to back and released upon completion of editing and post-production (some much later than others), so the production order (not release order) would look something more like this:

lensed? Yes. Released, no. Five Venoms was completed while Invincible Shaolin
was in the post-production/editing stages and released shortly thereafter. It
was originally intended to follow Ten Tigers, but upon being put on hold, it was
decided WU DU (5 venoms) would make a better introductory film for his new band
